Analyze Cultural Phenomena

The unique major is an excellent choice for students who are interested in producing professional scientific and technical texts, passionate about published information being ethical, and enjoy creating documents that help people and organizations accomplish their goals.

Exploring the ways science, technology, and culture influence each other in an array of contexts, coursework throughout the major will teach you how to communicate clearly and effectively with multiple audiences. Through electives and unique projects, you'll learn techniques and best practices for a variety of writing styles, including science, technical, nature and grant proposal writing, as well as what is required of those who edit and manage publications. This diverse set of classes allows you to become an expert in a number of areas and study the topics that most interest you.

Graduates of the RSTC emphasis leave with enhanced skills in critical thinking, writing, communication and analysis. They know how to reach a variety of audiences and understand the ways images and texts work together to create meaning. With a growing need for savvy, experienced communicators, these skills make our graduates extremely valuable — and highly sought after.

These internships often result in valuable professional experience that will set you apart when applying for jobs. Previous students have interned at places like Jamf Software, Mayo Clinic Health System, Silicon Graphics, Volume One, and the WEAU News Center.

UW-Eau Claire has earned national recognition for the research opportunities it provides to its students — something you'll certainly experience while part of the English department. Our faculty will regularly invite you to join one of their ongoing research projects or encourage you to start your own. Your work may include conducting captivating interviews, assisting faculty with data collection, or presenting your research findings at local and national conferences.

Apprenticeships and Tutoring Opportunities

As an RSTC major or minor, you'll have the unique opportunity to work as an academic apprentice. This may require you to facilitate class discussions, assist teams with group work, answer questions, provide input for class activities and assignments, or teach part of a class session. You may also choose to tutor other students outside of the English Department by becoming a Center for Writing Excellence writing assistant.

Cultural Immersion and Study Abroad Experiences

Partaking in global experiences is highly encouraged at UWEC, which is precisely why we offer so many opportunities to do so. Study abroad in places like England, France, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica, Scotland, South Africa, or Japan. Or explore transnationalism in Jamaica; cultural practices of the Hmong in Fresno, California; and the Civil Rights Pilgrimage in Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana during a cultural immersion program.
