Prevent theft before it happens

Theft is one of the more common crimes on the UW-Eau Claire Campus. You can help reduce the number of thefts by taking these proactive steps.

  • Keep an inventory of your items - Include the items serial number
  • Photograph your items or record distinguishing characteristics of the item
  • Use a permanent marker to write, or engrave, identifying information on your items
  • Don't share your dorm combination - Have it changed if you feel your combination has been compromised
  • Make sure your door fully closes - Don't leave your door propped open
  • Keep small valuables out of sight and store them in a secure location
  • Don't leave your valuables unattended in public areas
  • Don't keep valuables in your vehicle and remember to lock your vehicle
  • When securing your bicycle - Route the cable lock through the front tire AND bicycle frame
  • Utilize anti-theft tracking software/Apps on your cell phones, iPods, and laptops

How to Find Your Computer's MAC Address

A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a unique number assigned to your computer. This number can be used to aid Police in retrieving your stolen computer. Follow these steps to find your MAC address.

Windows Operating System

  1. Click on the Start Menu
  2. In the search bar type "run" and press enter
  3. Type "cmd" in the pop-up window
  4. At the command prompt, type "ipconfig/all" without quotes
  5. Your MAC Address is listed under "Physical Address" as a series of 6 groups of two digits, letters, and numbers, separated by dashes.

Mac Operating System

  1. Click on the apple icon at the far left of the top menu bar.
  2. From the drop-down menu choose "System Preferences" then "Network".
  3. Your MAC address will be the field labeled "Ethernet Address" under the "TCP/IP" tab.
