Teaching Academy

This week-long academy is an orientation to teaching and learning on campus. The primary purpose is exploring evidence-based and inclusive teaching practices to prepare for the upcoming academic year. You will have an opportunity to engage with other new instructors and campus faculty mentors. Whether you are a new or experienced educator, you will have opportunities to select from a variety of topics to ensure an impactful experience.

Educator Mentor Program

Upon request, new educators are matched with an experienced faculty member outside of their department. Matches are based on shared interests in teaching, research, campus life, and community topics. Meetings take place once or twice a month and can include discussion on teaching strategies, research opportunities, campus resources, campus involvement (committees, organizations, book groups), and community involvement.

Certificate Program

This spring program is designed for early-career educators who are interested in expanding their knowledge about teaching, learning, and instructional technology. Participants select discussion topics, talk with experienced faculty about successful teaching practices they use, and share positive experiences and challenges with each other. Certificates are awarded upon completion of a small teaching project.

Programming

CETL offers one-time learning sessions, panels, reading and discussion groups, communities of practice, and asynchronous course opportunities each year. Topics include teaching, learning, inclusive practices, and personal development. CETL also collaborates with Learning and Technology Services (LTS), McIntyre Library, the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) Office, and other units on campus to develop programming to support educators.

Individual Opportunities

CETL offers several services for faculty and staff interested in assessing and reflecting upon their current teaching practices.

Individual Consultation

CETL partners are available to offer ideas on an individual basis for any teaching and learning topics you would like to explore. Consultations by phone, email, face-to-face, and web-conferencing are available upon request.

Class Observation

A great way to get some formative feedback on your teaching and student engagement is to invite a CETL partner to sit in your class. You select the instructional goal, and a CETL staff member will observe and offer feedback.

Midterm Student Evaluation

CETL’s midterm student evaluation is a way to gain insight into what is helping your students learn, what is not helping your students learn, and what your students are doing to be successful. The process can take place through an online survey or an in-person focus group. CETL summarizes the data in a confidential report and offers options if change is desired.

Teaching and Learning Library

Visit CETL and browse our collection of books on teaching and learning topics. No check-out necessary! Read and return any of the books at your convenience.

Instructional Technology Support

Learning Management System

Canvas is a digital learning system that is easy to use, reliable, and mobile-friendly. Faculty use Canvas to enhance face-to-face instruction or teach courses completely online. Canvas allows access to course-related files, electronic assignments, online quizzes and tests, and grades.

Student Response System

iClicker is the student response system used on campus. CETL supports faculty with setting up their courses, syncing scores to the Canvas gradebook, and providing ideas on class activities to increase student interaction.

Video Creation

Integrated with Canvas, Kaltura/My Media is a media file repository where all media can be stored and shared through Canvas. Kaltura Capture is a media recording tool that allows for the recording of a webcam, screen, or both. It is easy to create and share videos using these selected tools. There are also campus videographers who can assist with video requests.

Learning Glass Video Recording Studio

The Learning Glass is a recording space to create engaging instructional videos. Instructors write on a large piece of glass which the camera records through, thus capturing the content and the instructor’s face together rather than their back.

Grants and Stipends

Summer Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

The SoTL Grant Program, funded by Blugold Commitment Differential Tuition, supports educator/student collaborative projects for development of teaching-related research projects or curricular revisions. Research projects or curriculum development will occur during the summer in collaboration with one or more students.

Online Course Development

Instructional designers will work with you to develop a quality online course that enhances student learning and meets the needs of our campus.
