Intro

Through the department honors program in mathematics, Blugolds majoring in mathematics liberal arts, actuarial science, applied mathematics/statistics and mathematics teaching are provided with additional opportunities to take their academic experience further. As part of honors, students will participate in high-impact practices such as collaborative research with a faculty member, presenting at a mathematics conference and more. Eligibility

Mathematics majors who have a resident and total GPA of 3.50 or higher, and have completed at least 12 hours of mathematics courses with a GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Application Process

An application must be submitted to the department chair, sponsored by a mathematics faculty member who can attest you have completed two activities from the list below. The application may be submitted during the junior or senior year.  It must be submitted in time for Degree Review to include your name in the list of departmental honors at graduation (typically about 6 weeks prior to graduation). Requirements

Graduate with a 3.50 GPA or higher in the major, and submit evidence to the department chair that two of the following have been satisfactorily completed:

  • A faculty/student collaborative mathematics research project
  • Score of 176 or above on the ETS Mathematics Content Knowledge assessment (Praxis II)
  • An off-campus mathematics presentation at a conference
  • Participation in a state, regional or national competition in Actuarial Science
  • Passing grade on two professional exams given by the Society of Actuaries or Casualty Actuarial Society
  • A mathematics related internship
  • Acceptance of a mathematics publication in a peer-reviewed journal

University Honors Program

Not only does UW-Eau Claire have departmental honors programs, but there is also a University Honors Program that eligible Blugolds can get involved with. As part of this program, high-achieving students take courses with unique subject matter that are designed to encourage discussion. In addition, activities outside of class help create a community.
