Develop Marketable Skills
Students may choose to pursue either the comprehensive studio art bachelor's degree or the standard studio art bachelor's degree. The comprehensive program provides flexibility for those with broad interests in a variety of artistic areas while helping them to refine applied skills in visual media. Students pursuing this option become experts in several disciplines — ranging from drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and photography. A minor or second major is not required for this degree.
The standard program offers a foundation in a specialized area of art, while also providing a strong background in art, design and art history. This program is an excellent option for those who aren't necessarily interested in art as a professional career path, but are still interested in using their artistic passions and talents in their future career. Students pursuing this option must pair the degree with a minor or second major.
No matter your path, the studio arts degree recognizes the growing interdisciplinary nature of practicing studio artists who may be painting one day and working with video the next. Artists who respond to commercial needs and who also wish to express their own ideas through gallery exhibitions or collaborations within communities and other industries will thrive in this degree program.
Program Details
All comprehensive studio art majors are required to participate in a travel experience while studying at UW-Eau Claire — and those pursuing the studio art standard degree are highly encouraged to participate as well. This could include a study abroad program, one of the department’s national field trips or at least two of the department’s regional field trips. Explore contemporary art and design in Minneapolis, Chicago, and New York City. Or find inspiration in some of the world's art and architecture meccas, like Florence, Rome, or Paris.
While pursuing your studio art degree, you'll work in collaborative environments where you are able to bridge multiple areas of course study to find answers to aesthetic questions in a larger social context. You'll share classes with fellow artists as well as those specializing in other fields, creating a diverse forum of artists and designers.
A variety of electives within the studio art degree allows you to become an expert in multiple areas of art and design. Courses are taught by expert faculty, with incredible expertise in their respective mediums. Your professors will go out of their way to advise and assist you in crafting individualized educational experiences, ensuring you get the most out of your degree. And thanks to our growing partnerships within the community, you'll have access to internships and professional opportunities prior to graduation.
UW-Eau Claire is home to the Foster Gallery, the largest art gallery in the Eau Claire area. Art & Design students can take advantage of this learning space through exhibition receptions, open viewings, installation opportunities, guest speaker presentations, and the chance to participate in the annual juried student art show.

I chose UWEC’s art and design program because it gave me more opportunities to touch art and ideas that interest me — to satisfy my curiosity. My major covers a wide range of highly applicable courses, including photography, drawing, ceramics, and sculpture.

Where can the studio art program lead me after graduation?
From photographing events for a local magazine to working at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts to helping organizations with their print advertising, Blugolds are taking their studio art degrees in many different directions. And with current trends in artistic careers calling for those with broader interests and the ability to work across a variety of media, artists with a studio art degree are in high demand.
The comprehensive studio art degree is designed to provide students with artistic knowledge in several areas of art or design, providing an excellent technical, conceptual, creative, and aesthetic foundation for broader artistic career options. An additional program, such as a major, minor or certificate, is not required.
Students who pursue the standard studio art degree will gain conceptual and practical skills through foundation courses and build upon them in media-specific courses with technical, creative and aesthetic philosophies. In order to meet the 60-credit graduation requirement, this degree must be paired with either a second major, minor, or certificate. Previous Blugolds have combined their standard studio art major with other in-demand disciplines like marketing, management, communication studies, the sciences, languages, or art history.

A studio art course in creating photographs. Includes: concepts, analysis of works and development of composition and technique. Camera work, image processing, professional printing. Digitally based, color and black and white.

Beginning Sculpture
Hands-on exploration of a variety of materials, techniques, and concepts related to contemporary sculpture.
