Building Lifelong Relationships
In the CSD Department, our faculty and staff are educators and mentors. We work closely with our undergraduate and graduate students to provide them with evidence-based teaching approaches and clinical experiences. We are passionate about the profession of speech-language pathology and share that passion with each of our students.
Abby Hemmerich is a professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Prior to coming to UW-Eau Claire, she practiced clinically in acute care, rehabilitation, and outpatient speech-language pathology settings. Her main area of academic and clinical expertise is voice disorders.

Nicole Jones is a Professor of American Sign Language. She teaches undergraduate courses of American Sign Language, Levels 1 - 4. Her courses are offered both face-to-face and online. She is the Faculty Advisor for the American Sign Language Honor Society student organization.

Dr. Lesley Mayne is an associate professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders department at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in augmentative and assistive communication and speech sound disorders with a focus on blending theory with practice. Her research interests include her teaching areas as well as autism and pedagogy. Undergraduate student researchers are active members of her research teams.
Ms. Kelly Muller joined the department full time in the fall of 2022, and prior to that worked as a school-based speech-language pathologist for 9 years. She currently supervises undergraduate and graduate student clinicians at our campus clinic, the Center for Communication Disorders, and teaches both online and face-to-face courses on clinical procedures and child language disorders. Her research interests center around issues in clinical supervision.
Brian Orr teaches coursework and provides clinical training focused on the interdisciplinary assessment and treatment of language and literacy disorders. He is the faculty supervisor for the speech-language pathology teams assigned to the Human Development Center and Language and Literacy Clinic. His research interests focus on integrating the interdisciplinary concept of human flourishing within speech-language pathology, supporting families engaged in home education, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Ms. Lindsay Pohlen, M.S., CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist and clinical instructor who specializes in pediatrics. She teaches undergraduate coursework in facilitating communication in preschoolers and graduate coursework in birth to 21 methods in federally mandated settings. She supervises both undergraduate and graduate student clinicians in the Center for Communication Disorders (CCD), our on-campus speech and language clinic, and is the director of the CCD. Additionally, Ms. Pohlen coordinates off-site school placements for graduate students.
