Dr. Yaakov Levi earned his Ph.D. in Semitic and Biblical Studies, and Early Judaism and Early Christianity from the University of Heidelberg (Magna Cum Laude). His professional activities are extensive. For eighteen years, Dr. Levi served as professor of Hebrew Language, Hebrew literature, Biblical Studies and Rabbinical Studies at the University of Haifa in Israel. He also taught at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, Carleton College, and the University of Minnesota. For thirteen years he served as the Director of Technological Terminology at the Academy of the Hebrew Language, coining Modern Hebrew words. From 1989 to 1995 he worked in rebuilding the Jewish education system in Germany (Berlin). Dr. Levi is the author of many books and articles. His research activities have focused on many issues in the fields of Hebrew language, Bible, Judaic Studies, and Jewish education. Dr. Levi has also translated and edited many books. He served as a member of the team of translators of the New Testament into Modern Hebrew. He is known internationally for his contributions to the study of Biblical Hebrew.
At Eau Claire, Dr. Levi teaches Holocaust, Judaism, and Old Testament/Hebrew Bible. Beyond the traditional academic goals, his focus is on applying the principle of “Repairing the World” (“Tikkun Olam”), building lasting bridges, and promoting mutual understanding and respect amongst people through joyful learning and students’ involvement/engagement in the learning experience.
