Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), you have the right to restrict the release of certain student information. Personally identifiable information such as your social security number, grades and GPA, class schedules, and transcripts are not available to any third party without your written consent unless you are a designated UW-Eau Claire official with legitimate educational interest or as designated by FERPA. Enacting a FERPA restriction is considered a more restrictive option than excluding your email address from third-parties because it restricts the release of your information to all non-university entities, not just third party vendors wanting to send you information. This hold will prohibit the release of information to potential employers, local newspapers, etc.
The following is considered directory information and can be restricted from release:
- Phone number(s) only - restricts release of all phone numbers
- Address(es) only - restricts release of student's physical address
- All academic and biographical information** - restricts release of all directory information
** Note: You should consider very carefully the consequences of restricting the release of all academic and biographical information. Restriction of all academic and biographical information will result in a refusal of request in the future for potential employers, non-university parties or organizations.
