WRIT Courses + Placement

All students must satisfy the University Writing Requirement in order to graduate. Most students will meet this requirement by taking a Blugold Seminar (WRIT) course, and we have different versions of the Blugold Seminar tailored to your needs. Some students may meet the University Writing Requirement through the English Placement Test, AP English scores, or by other means. University Writing Requirement

Students satisfy the University Writing Requirement, which is a requirement for graduation (Skills 1 in the Liberal Education framework) in one of five ways:

• completing a Blugold Seminar in Critical Reading and Writing course (WRIT 114, WRIT 116, WRIT 118, or WRIT 120) with a grade of C (not C-) or above
• achieving a suitable score on the English Placement Test (WPT ENGL)
• achieving a suitable score on an exam such as the Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition or Advanced Placement English Language and Composition exams
• achieving a suitable score on the University Writing Program Portfolio, or
• transferring equivalent coursework, approved by the English Department.

All students are encouraged to satisfy the University Writing Requirement before the completion of the sophomore year.

WRIT course and placement information

Students are placed into a WRIT course using the highest placement of the following:

• WRIT 907L credit with a grade of C or better
• UW System English placement test (WPT ENGL) score
• Advanced Placement English Language and Composition (AP ENGC) or English Literature and Composition (AP ELC) score 

Advice for Students:

• Students who have taken AP English (ENGC or ELC) should wait until Spring to take a WRIT course. AP scores must be processed by Academic Testing and showing on the student's record in CampS before the student registers for a WRIT course.
• WRIT course placement is mandatory; a student may not take a different WRIT course than the one they placed into.
• WRIT courses are themed, and students are encouraged to select a WRIT course that has a theme of interest to them.
