Dr. Joshua Schwalbach

Josh Schwalbach is Lecturer of Double Bass and Music Theory at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. A dedicated and enthusiastic educator, Josh has also taught undergraduate double bass at College of St. Benedict/St. John's University, University of St. Thomas, and Stony Brook University. His commitment to pre-college pedagogy has led him to work extensively with middle and high school students, centering his teaching methods around the George Vance Progressive Repertoire. Josh’s students have gone on to pursue graduate and undergraduate performance degrees at Indiana University, Cleveland Institute of Music, University of North Texas, and Carnegie Mellon University, as well as to become music educators in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Josh has served on the faculty of numerous summer music programs, including the Minnesota All-State Orchestra Camp, Twin Cities Bass Camp, Upper Midwest String Camp, Southwest Minnesota String Festival, and St. Mary’s University String Festival. Josh has performed with orchestras across the region and country, including South Dakota Symphony, Duluth Superior Symphony, Lacrosse Symphony, Symphoria Syracuse, Long Island Symphonic Choral Arts, and the Mankato Symphony. As an Early Music enthusiast, Josh is a member of the Lyra Baroque Orchestra and has performed on viola da gamba with Transept (SD), The Aulos Ensemble (NY), Cerulean Fire (MN), and as part of the Twin Cities and Boston Early Music Festivals. He also has toured and recorded extensively with the Rose Ensemble, on both double bass and viola da gamba.

Josh is a native of Windom, Minnesota. He holds a D.M.A. degree from Stony Brook University, where he studied double bass with Kurt Muroki and Joseph Carver.
