Dr. Alison Gilbert

Alison Gilbert is a musicologist and pianist originally hailing from Northeast Ohio. She is Associate Lecturer of Music History at UW-Eau Claire, teaching courses in Western art music history, popular music, and world music.

Through a range of eras and topics, Dr. Gilbert’s academic work has focused on the intersections of music and literature. Her research interests include English song in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the works of female composers, and the literary music of Robert Schumann. In the course of her doctoral work, she spent the 2021-2022 academic year at the University of Oxford, doing archival research and supporting American study abroad students. Dr. Gilbert has presented research at national and international conferences including the American Musicological Society, the North American British Music Studies Association, and the conference on Music in Nineteenth-Century Britain.

Dr. Gilbert recently completed her PhD at the University of Georgia, with a dissertation entitled “The Composer as Literary Critic: Musical Readings of Victorian Poetry in English Song.” She also holds degrees from the University of Denver (MA, musicology), Miami University (MM, piano), and the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music (BM, piano)
