Majors and Minors in Chemistry and Biochemistry

With a wide range of majors to choose from, we can serve your interests and prepare you with the knowledge and practical experiences to launch a career in any area of chemistry. Our graduates find opportunities immediately after graduation, whether they seek employment directly, or choose to pursue advanced studies in graduate or professional school. Our programs are broadly applicable to a wide range of industries, and provide a skill set that is relevant, marketable, and adaptable. Not only do our graduates find employment, they also retain a great deal of mobility that allows movement between industries throughout their careers.
Meet the Faculty
Our department is home to faculty who are active practitioners of the field and have been successful in obtaining external grants to fund research and acquire state-of-the-art instrumentation. However, because we lack chemistry graduate students, our professors are much more accessible than those at major research universities. At UW-Eau Claire, you will learn from some of the best — award-winning teacher-scholars focused exclusively on undergraduate education.
We have established a well-deserved reputation for providing these hands-on learning experiences for undergraduate students, funding them through external grants, and placing students in top graduate programs. Participating in a collaborative project with a faculty mentor enables students to apply their knowledge and skills in a hands-on setting. Through these opportunities, students can earn course credit and/or pay, publish their work in research journals, and travel (expenses paid) to conferences to present results and confer with experts in the field.
Our department is one of only a handful nationwide to offer a major program In Chemistry-Business. Our program features integrated coursework focused on industrial chemistry, and extended alumni network, and an industrial chemistry careers seminar course each fall. The major provides Blugolds with opportunities to learn how chemistry is utilized in the business world, and how it underlies many of the products we use on a daily basis.

Collaborative research experience is at the heart of UW-Eau Claire's pre-med program. Whether you are working directly with a faculty member or a Mayo Clinic health professional, you'll gain the real-world knowledge and skills you need to prepare for a career in the medical field.
I was scared going into research. I definitely felt imposter syndrome. How can I possibly qualify to be in a research lab? But once you start, you realize that the professors know that you don't know everything, and that's okay. The professors want to help you, teach you, see you grow. So, it's not as scary as you might think it's going to be. And I'm super grateful that I was able to start research so early because I've been able to learn a lot and hone my skills. I feel a lot more confident about going into my career.
I have friends who go to bigger universities, and they say they don’t even see their professors. Here, I was a freshman already doing research with my professor. It’s been a great experience.
Biology major Steph Walters understands the importance of loving your smile. While studying in the Dominican Republic, she had the opportunity to create partials or bridges for individuals who wanted them. Seeing the transitions and the joy they brought, Steph was determined more than ever about pursuing dentistry.
