Social Work Department

Blugolds studying social work have the opportunity to serve as an Instructional Assistant. These assistants help their professor facilitate small group discussions during class sessions and partner with the faculty member to serve as one more source of support for students in the classroom.

This is a valuable way to gain leadership experience as a current UWEC student.

Many social work students participate in faculty-student research projects. These student researchers work closely with faculty mentors to collect and analyze data. Plus, once the project is finished, you may have the opportunity to present your research at local and regional conferences.

Recent Research Projects Include:

• Learning about the experiences of individuals in the Eau Claire community who are homeless
• Engaging with child welfare workers in Wisconsin to learn about how they care for their own well-being while supporting the needs of the children and families with whom they work

Association of Student Social Workers (ASSW)

The Association of Student Social Workers is an organization dedicated to meeting the social and professional interests of social work students. ASSW holds meetings regularly, and topics range from inviting guest social workers to discuss their areas of practice to purely social activities such as the beginning and end-of-year picnics.

Macro Student Networking Group

The Macro Student Networking Group is a student-driven organization that focuses on challenging and repairing large-scale systemic issues that affect large groups of people or entire communities and cultures. The group participates in various activities including advocacy, policy practice, community organizing, voter mobilization, community education, and advancing social justice.

The group recently hosted a Social Justice Film Festival and a fundraising event to purchase hygiene products to be donated to community non-profit organizations.

While UW-Eau Claire has numerous scholarships open to every student, the Social Work Department has a number of scholarships that are specific to our discipline.

The Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Program is a partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire BSW program and the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families. This training program prepares BSW students for employment in public child welfare. This program provides financial support to BSW students interested in pursuing a career specific to child welfare. The goal of this training is to strengthen the Wisconsin public child welfare workforce.

Admitted Trainees:

• Receive federally funded tuition and stipends for two semesters. Complete specific coursework in child welfare.
• Engage in a child welfare-focused internship.
• Upon graduation, commit to working at least one year in Wisconsin in public child welfare.

How to Apply:

Applications are accepted each semester. The Social Work Department will notify students when the application period is open for a given semester.

Full-time BSW students who are on target to complete their field placement a year after the application period are eligible to apply. Applicants to the traineeship must hold U.S. citizenship or have permanent residence status at the time of application.
