Collaborative Research

Many students within the Department of Psychology get involved with a research project, working alongside a faculty member. These students can present their research at regional, national, or international conferences, and they sometimes co-author published works within scholarly journals. Depending on the project, some students get paid for their contributions as well.

Student Opportunities

Internships

Internships—both on- and off-campus—allow you to gain real life experiences while you're still getting your degree. Gain skills you can use in the workforce post-graduation and test a career to see if it'll be the right path for you.

Many Blugolds complete paid or volunteer internships over the summer, or during the semester. Psychology students can sometimes earn course credits associated with those internships as well.

Cultural Immersions

Take your learning to a new level by experiencing a culture different from your own. Cultures have the power to influence how the brain works as well as reasoning and thinking patterns. An immersion experience can open you up to new norms and ways of thinking and behaving.

Traveling with my mentor, Dr. Jennifer Muehlenkamp, to present research at the American Association of Suicidology national conference was the start to the most amazing year. I ended up doing research in collaboration with Mayo Clinic, traveling to Rochester, Minnesota, and its beautiful campus — all due to the networking and opportunities I took advantage of at UWEC.

Blugold Support Comes Full Circle

Coming into college, Parker Lay had no idea what psychology and research entailed until he was selected for the Blugold Fellowship program. The program provides an opportunity to work alongside faculty on special projects or collaborative research and get paid for a fascinating experience. Parker also served as a mentor for the University Honors Program, teaching incoming students about research preparation and presentation to help them develop their speaking skills and confidence.

First-Hand Experience Sets Blugolds Apart

Blugolds in the school psychology program have the first-hand field experience they need to excel in their field straight out of graduation. These students work on real cases — not simulations or case studies. Partnerships and collaboration between the hard-working faculty supervisors and students are valued as a one-of-a-kind experience at UW-Eau Claire.

Students will participate in high-level laboratory research and training in the fields of neuroscience and regenerative sciences this summer at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, through a nearly $600,000 National Institutes of Health grant.
