Study Transnational Asian Studies at UWEC
A multidisciplinary program, the transnational Asian studies certificate is designed to be customized to fit your needs. All classes that make up the 15-credit certificate are chosen by you. Explore courses in communication and journalism, economics, history, political science, religious studies, sociology, and Asian languages. Three credits from a study abroad course also may count toward the certificate's requirements.
Program Details
The ability to customize the transnational Asian studies certificate allows you to study the topics that most interest you or align with your career goals. Better understand Asian cultural, social and political history. Examine the economies of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Explore causes and consequences of prejudice, racism, and discrimination. Or learn how to speak Chinese, Hmong, or Japanese.
While pursuing the transnational Asian studies certificate, you'll have the option to participate in an international immersion in either India or China. The three-week, in-country experience will give you firsthand experience with Indian or Chinese business, culture, politics, history, religion, and society.

Through a vast selection of elective courses, you'll have the opportunity to examine the social, cultural and political histories of China or Japan; study the policies, legacies, and debates of the Vietnam war; develop an understanding of Buddhist or Hindu beliefs; and select introductory Chinese, Hmong, or Japanese language courses to broaden your communication skills. No matter the combination of courses, you'll complete the certificate with a depth of knowledge about people of Asian ancestry.
