University Police: Chief of Police
Job Information
POSITION: A full-time sworn law enforcement position is currently available in University Police. The working title for this assignment is chief of police with an official title of chief of police. This is an executive (limited) appointment serving at the discretion of the vice chancellor of finance and administration and chancellor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
• Certification or ability to be certified by Wisconsin Department of Justice, Training and Standards Bureau as a Police Officer in the State of Wisconsin
• Three or more years of experience supervising police personnel
• Seven or more years of experience working in a university police agency, or a police agency within a community closely connected with a college/university
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Business Administration, Higher Education Administration or related fields
• Evidence of working collaboratively in a college or university setting
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with local and regional policing agencies
• Experience coordinating emergency management, critical incident response and/or crisis intervention situations
• Completion of a law enforcement leadership academy, institute or command school
DUTIES:
Reporting to the vice chancellor of finance and administration, the chief of police is responsible for directing the day-to-day operations and the management of the University Police Department. The chief serves in a command role as the lead manager of the uniformed services of the university police force. This position is responsible for assigning, coordinating, and directing police resources; deploying and overseeing the allocation of police resources through the lieutenant, sergeants, patrol officers, and support staff ensuring patrol unit responses to calls for service are handled in a timely and professional manner; and overseeing and supporting all functions relating to training and emergency planning. Further, the chief ensures that all members of the department are effectively trained, prepared, and supported to perform their duties protecting the university community by employing the practices and philosophy of community policing and exceptional community service. The chief works to ensure the university environment is kept safe and that maximum attention is paid by patrol staff to community needs, and safety and security concerns. This position conducts ongoing assessments of the proficiency of patrol and operational procedures and resources; ensures the department keeps up with best practices and current trends in campus safety; oversees the active and ongoing implementation of community-oriented policing programs and initiatives; assumes a leadership role in event planning, Incident Command, crisis preparation, and response; and maintains effective and collaborative relationships with key members of campus, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
THE UNIT: The unit of University Police is committed to providing quality law enforcement and public safety services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
