Music and Theatre Arts: Director of Athletic Bands
Job Information
POSITION: The Department of Music and Theatre Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a 12-month, fixed term academic staff position as Director of Athletic Bands. This appointment carries an initial appointment of three years, with the possibility of additional multi-year appointments, beginning July 1, 2025. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
QUALIFICATIONS: Doctorate preferred; Master’s required. Demonstrated experience leading athletic bands and conducting at the collegiate level, advanced knowledge of marching band techniques, and excellent organizational and communications skills. Ability to write marching band drill and musical arrangements will be considered an asset.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve as Director of the 425-member Blugold Marching Band, maintaining and expanding its current scope, visibility, and prominence, and leading annual regional tours and biennial international or national trips. Oversee the Blugold Athletic Band, conduct the University Band (a non-major concert band), teach marching band techniques (including basic drill writing and arranging), and other duties that fit the candidate’s strengths and specializations. Lead a large, vibrant, and successful athletic band program, effectively recruit for the Department and University, engage in outreach, teaching, administration, and leadership, work collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands, departmental faculty, and UWEC Athletics.
DEPARTMENT: The Department of Music and Theatre Arts serves over 420 majors and minors, and 120 certificate-seeking students, supported by approximately 31 full-time and 11 part-time faculty and 7 staff. UW-Eau Claire has a large, comprehensive, and respected Band Program, with three concert bands, four jazz ensembles and multiple jazz combos, and the Blugold Marching Band, as well as many instrument-specific chamber ensembles. The Department has an active Dance Program and offers possibilities for collaboration with the BMB Dance Line. The Department is highly regarded in the state and region and enriches the Eau Claire community while providing outstanding academic opportunities. Faculty are active solo and collaborative performers and are dedicated to innovative teaching. Academic programs include the BM degree in performance and composition; the BME degree in instrumental and choral music education; the BA and BS degrees in music and musical theatre.
