POSITION: A 100% academic staff position (40 hours per week) is available in Student Support Services (SSS) beginning Fall 2024. The official title of this position is Student Affairs Program Specialist, and the working title is Academic Advising Coordinator. This position reports to the Director of SSS; the individual is required to work in the office within the standard hours of 7:45am to 4:30pm. This position is contingent on grant funding, and the salary will be $52,000 - $56,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Academic Advising Coordinator provides individual and group advising for project participants to promote their retention and graduation. The coordinator closely monitors the students academic performance and assists in developing programming to address their educational needs. The coordinator also provides information to students on financial planning, financial literacy, FAFSA completion, and graduate school planning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A master's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Experience advising students
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in college student development, educational psychology, vocational rehabilitation, or a related field.
  • Three years' experience in the provision of student services, preferably for Student Support Services participants or similar populations.
  • Experience in advising undeclared students and knowledge of a variety of academic program requirements are assets.
  • Experience providing classroom instruction or conducting workshops
  • Awareness of the concerns facing students who are first-generation/low-income. Experience in overcoming barriers like those confronting the project participants is considered an asset.

DUTIES:

  • Assist with the interviewing and selection of project participants.
  • Assess the educational needs of project participants and identify services that will promote their academic development.
  • Advise participants regarding majors, course selection, degree planning, career development, and university policies, as either official or supplemental advisor.
  • Monitor the academic performance and degree progress of all project participants, coordinating the project's midterm intervention and other academic support efforts. 
  • Perform outreach for students experiencing academic difficulty.
  • Teach a section of General Arts and Sciences 100, Foundations for Academic Success, to facilitate the transition of new program participants into the university environment.
  • Assist in supervising student mentors and planning learning-community activities. 
  • Teach a section of General Arts and Sciences 260: Graduate School Exploration, to assist students in developing career goals. Design and implement programming for participants on such topics as financial and economic literacy, financial aid information, FAFSA completion, and scholarship applications.
  • Provide students with advice, information, and instruction regarding admission into postbaccalaureate education programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff in academic departments and student service units to address the needs of the project participants and to promote positive relationships.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, to promote the academic achievement, retention, and graduation of project participants, including advising SSS Student Org: Advisory Board.

THE UNIT: 

The TRIO Student Support Services project receives funding from the U.S. Department of Education to promote the retention and graduation rates of 300 eligible students who are from low-income households, are first-generation college students, or have disabilities. The Academic Advising Coordinator contributes to this objective by assisting the students in setting career goals, gaining access to career development experiences, and preparing for and conducting the employment search.
