Geology and Environmental Science: Assistant Professor in Environmental Geology/Geochemistry

POSITION:

The Department of Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of Environmental Geology/Geochemistry. The position is anticipated to be filled at the Assistant Professor level. The appointment will begin on August 18, 2025.

QUALIFICATIONS:

An earned Ph.D. in geology or a closely related discipline prior to the appointment start date is required. The department seeks to hire a person who will strengthen our field-oriented teaching and research of environmental topics. Demonstrated success in teaching and collaborative research at the undergraduate level is desirable but not required. The ability to enhance diversity and serve as a role model and mentor for women and/or minorities will be considered an asset.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will teach introductory-level environmental courses and upper-division courses in the hydrogeology and water chemistry emphasis (e.g., Geochemistry and Chemical Hydrogeology). They will contribute to teaching a new hydrogeology field course, and they will have the opportunity to contribute to our geology field courses in New Mexico and Montana. Beyond teaching, responsibilities will include conducting collaborative research with undergraduate students, advising, and service to the department and university. 

DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Geology and Environmental Science has six faculty, robust course enrollment, and approximately ninety majors. Students pursuing a degree in the Department of Geology and Environmental Science select an emphasis in general geology, hydrogeology and water chemistry, environmental science, or dual-degree geological engineering. The department prides itself on our long tradition of a central focus on collaborative student-faculty research. Laboratory facilities include a state-of-the-art electron microscope facility with associated prep equipment, a modern analytical geochemistry laboratory containing a Bruker S8 WD-XRF spectrometer, and a Bruker D8 powder diffractometer, a high P/T experimental petrology laboratory, micro-FTIR spectrometer, a 16-station petrography laboratory with a petrography research annex, a dedicated computer laboratory with geochemical, GIS and groundwater modeling software, geophysical instrumentation (GPR, frequency domain EM, gravity meter, magnetometer, resistivity meter, seismograph), tensiometers, hydrogeological laboratory and equipment for slug/well tests, lab equipment for soil characterization and permeameter analysis, and 11 on-campus educational monitoring wells. The Department is a collaborative member of the Materials Science Center, a consortium between Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Geology and Environmental Science focused on nanoscience, materials science research and collaboration with industry.
