Academic Skills Center: Director

POSITIONA full-time, professional academic staff position is available in The Academic Skills Center beginning August 15, 2024. The working title for this assignment is Director, Academic Skills Center with an official title of Learning Center Director (B). This is a limited appointment. The salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSA master's degree from a regionally accredited institution; college-level teaching experience;  experience with academic skills center functions such as student success courses, Supplemental Instruction, peer tutoring, peer coaching, and development and support of online learning resources; commitment to a strengths-based approach to student support; experience supervising or leading a team; ability to create a climate of collaboration within and beyond the Academic Skills Center; demonstrated commitment to support and enhance the diversity and cultural and global awareness of students, faculty, and staff.

DUTIES:

Leadership and Supervision:

  • Set the direction of the Academic Skills Center (ASC), including identification of student needs and evidence-based practices to meet those needs
  • Develop and supervise 3-4 learning specialists, a department assistant, and graduate student(s) when applicable
  • Support learning specialists in the hiring, training and evaluation of student tutors, coaches and SI leaders
  • Oversee the hiring, training, and supervision of student employees staffing the Welcome Desk in the Student Success Center
  • Manage the ASC Center budget, aligning spending with strategic priorities

Program Delivery and Development:

  • Oversee all ASC operations, including curriculum development, staffing and evaluation of credit bearing courses, Supplemental Instruction, peer tutoring, peer coaching, Student Success Program, academic support for online learners, and web presence.
  • Teach two to three sections of student success classes yearly based on the needs of the unit
  • Develop new programs as indicated by student need and evidence-based practice
  • Assess all ASC programming to support continuous improvement and report annually to AVC and University Assessment Committee

Collaboration and Outreach:

  • Develop and implement a strategic communication plan to raise awareness, increase referrals, and increase use of services.
  • Serve as liaison to the Rapid Response Team in Enrollment Management with advice on resources for students in need of academic support
  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with Associate Deans to support students on academic concern, probation, and probation after suspension.
  • Promote collaborative relationships with other directors in the Student Success Center as well as students, faculty, staff, and administrators to generate a positive working and learning climate
  • Engage in professional development
  • Serve on university committees aligned with interest and expertise
  • Perform other duties as identified by the Associate Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs

THE UNITThe Academic Skills Center consists of 5 staff members including the director. The Academic Skills Center (ASC) provides academic support programs that enhance students¿ ability to learn both generally and in particular disciplines, build resilience and academic confidence, and increase rates of retention and graduation. Programs provided by the ASC include student success courses, Supplemental Instruction (SI), peer tutoring and peer coaching. Services are provided at various times in the Student Success Center, McIntyre Library, and the Suites residence hall.
