Majors and Minors in Languages

The Department of Languages offers a variety of majors, minors, certificates and courses in several languages. All of our programs help you develop a practical usage of your chosen language, and you will be strongly encouraged to try out your new skills in a native-speaking country through an immersion experience. Connect globally and locally, to enjoy cultural events, conversation groups, and study abroad programs that make the world more accessible. Your advanced language skills can open up opportunities in various fields.

These faculty-led experiences focus on interesting topics and can range from a week to semester-long time frames and include travel in or out of the country.

Immersion program options: Culture, Society, and History in Argentina; Central European Travel Seminar; Sports in Japan; Camino de Santiago in Spain, France, and Portugal; Traditional Chinese Medicine and Holistic Nursing in Taiwan; Hmong culture in Southeast Asia; Biology in Belize; Global Health in Costa Rica; Social and Environmental Justice in Guatemala; Migrant Workers’ Families in Mexico; Globalization in Thailand

In UWEC's Languages Department, you will experience interactive lessons and cultural experiences — taught by knowledgeable, award-winning professors and instructors.

French professor Dr. Jessica Miller was named Wisconsin Teacher of the Year by the Wisconsin Association of Language teachers. Dr. Josh Brown, professor of German, has received the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award, the UW System’s Poorman Award for LGBTQ+ advocacy, and the Raymond & Tamara Skwierczynski University Fellowship.

Many of our programs have been recognized nationally for their excellence. The French program has been named a National Exemplary Program with Honors by the American Association of Teachers of French. And both the French and Chinese programs have received the Global Engagement Initiative Award from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
