Languages Department

If you want to pair your major or minor with an incredible experience somewhere around the world, you've come to the right department. While all Blugolds are encouraged to immerse themselves in another culture through study abroad, languages students lead the way. With established study abroad programs in more than 10 different countries, you'll be able to practice your language skills surrounded by native speakers.

The programs below vary from semester to year long exchange programs, but you can also experience shorter trips over the summer months. You can earn credits in applicable majors and minors for any of the following programs:

• Costa Rica

• Pau, France
• Marburg, Germany
• Japan
• Puebla, Mexico
• Bilbao, Spain
• Valencia, Spain
• Valladolid, Spain

There are several other study abroad program options are available through the Center for International Education.

Currently the department of languages only offers a Spanish Honors Program. The Honors Program in Spanish is intended for Spanish majors-including Spanish education and liberal arts majors-who have demonstrated excellence in their coursework, and who want to experience the study of languages outside the classroom.

State-of-the-art technology that can help advance your language skills is ready and waiting for you to use it. The Language Lab and Roma Hoff Instructional Resource Center located in Centennial Hall 4712 is filled with sound/video programs, foreign films and computer software that will take what you learn in class and make you practice it.

Languages, like departments all across campus, makes student/faculty research a priority. Undergraduate research is so important at our university that we have been designated as the Center of Excellence for Faculty and Undergraduate Student Research in the UW System. There is even a whole week dedicated to celebrating the research of our faculty and staff each year. Bring your curiosity and get involved in research that interests you.

• The Edith O'Connor Scholarship in French – One award of $350
• Vernon J. Gingerich Foreign Language Scholarship – One award of $900
• Martha Worthington Foreign Studies Scholarship – Two awards of $450

German Scholarships

• Hilda Belle Oxby German Scholarship – A variable number of awards from $100 up to $750
• John and Hilde Bacharach German Scholarship – Two scholarships from $350 up to $700

Spanish Scholarships

• Hilda Belle Oxby Spanish Scholarship – A variable number of awards from $100 up to $750
• Josette T. Migawa Spanish Scholarship – One award of $500
• Marian Kragness Johnston Spanish Scholarship – Two awards of $2,500
• Richard E. Olson Spanish Study Abroad Scholarship – One award of $1,000
• Roma Hoff Scholarship – A variable number of scholarships from $100 up to $2,800 

Clubs and organizations are a great way to be involved in your major/minor outside of the classroom. Not only will you meet new people while getting involved in fun activities, but you will also be able to include it on your résumé.
