Languages Department

If you want to pair your major or minor with an incredible experience somewhere around the world, you've come to the right department. While all Blugolds are encouraged to immerse themselves in another culture through study abroad, languages students lead the way. With established study-abroad programs in more than 10 different countries, you'll be able to apply and develop your language skills in new ways while creating connections and developing friendships abroad.

The length of the programs below varies from a semester to a year, but you can also experience shorter trips over the summer. You can earn credits for any of the following programs:

The Spanish Honors Program is intended for all students majoring in Spanish who have demonstrated excellence in their coursework, and who want to experience the study of languages outside the classroom. Students of other languages will soon have access to the Honors Program in Languages. Contact your instructor for more information.

The Language Lab is located in Centennial Hall 4712. You can use the computers during the hours below and when not reserved for class. You will have access to audio/video programs, films, and software that will complement and help you practice what you’ve learned in class.

Students in Languages, like in all departments across campus, have opportunities to engage in research. They assist faculty with their research or follow their curiosity and create their own project with a faculty mentor. Languages students have been involved in research on a variety of topics including culture, linguistics, literature, and pedagogy.

There will be no shortage of exciting, life-changing opportunities during your time at UW-Eau Claire. Whether for you that means an interesting research project, a cultural immersion experience to another country or something totally unique to you, there is financial support available to help you achieve what you set out to do.

• The Edith O'Connor Scholarship in French – One award of $350
• Vernon J. Gingerich Foreign Language Scholarship – One award of $900
• Martha Worthington Foreign Studies Scholarship – Two awards of $450
• Robert E. Nelson, Jr. Foreign Languages Scholarship – One award of $1,000

German Scholarships

• Hilda Belle Oxby German Scholarship – A variable number of awards from $100 up to $750
• John and Hilde Bacharach German Scholarship – Two scholarships from $350 up to $700

Spanish Scholarships

• Hilda Belle Oxby Spanish Scholarship – A variable number of awards from $100 up to $750
• Josette T. Migawa Spanish Scholarship – One award of $500
• Marian Kragness Johnston Spanish Scholarship – Two awards of $2,500
• Robert E. Nelson, Jr. Foreign Languages Scholarship – One award of $1,000
• Roma Hoff Scholarship – A variable number of scholarships from $100 up to $2,800 

Clubs and organizations are a great way to extend your exposure to languages and cultures outside the classroom. Not only will you meet new people while getting involved in fun activities, but if you become a club officer you will also be able to include it on your resume as a leadership skill.
